It’s so refreshing to hear a similar insight into ‘just a name’. Our children have been with us for almost a year, and had very unusual names prior to their placement with us. The SW decided they should be changed for their safety, which we understood and accepted – but there felt an excitement from anyone other than myself that they would get ‘normal’ names. They were 5 and 6 and have adapted well, but knowing them for 2 months prior to the placement order I feel a loss of those two quirky little ones in a way that I can only skim the surface of what they feel. The loss of something so integral to who they were.
