Helping Adopted Teens Build Confidence

Hi, I’m Sam Hook, a confidence coach and qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor based in Newcastle upon Tyne.

As well as working with many adopted teenagers, I also have an adopted teenage daughter myself, so I understand firsthand the unique challenges that can come with adoption.

Being a teenager is already a time of self-discovery and transition, but for adopted teens, issues of identity, belonging, and self-worth can sometimes feel magnified. Many young people I work with describe feeling like they don’t “fit in” with their birth family, struggling with self-doubt, or questioning their sense of worth. Thoughts of rejection, feeling “not good enough,” or comparing themselves to others can have a real impact on confidence and emotional wellbeing.

How Confidence Coaching Can Help

Confidence coaching (and psychotherapeutic coaching which combines the two and is what I offer) can be a powerful way for adopted teenagers to develop self-confidence, manage their emotions, and build resilience. Every young person responds to their personal journey in a different way—some may express their feelings openly, while others may act out or withdraw. My coaching sessions provide a safe, supportive space where teens can explore their emotions, identify their strengths, and develop a more positive self-image.

Through my confidence coaching programme, I help teenagers:

  • Increase self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Reduce anxiety and manage stress
  • Feel reassured about their future and decision-making
  • Discover what makes them unique
  • Work through their emotions in a healthy way
  • Develop a positive and more helpful/compassionate mindset

What’s Included in the Programme?

I offer a structured programme of four one-hour coaching sessions, but I also provide one-off sessions or group workshops depending on individual needs. The programme covers:

  • Understanding self-confidence and how to develop and practise it
  • Identifying and challenging negative self-talk
  • Recognising limiting beliefs and learning how to reframe them
  • Exploring the difference between a fixed and growth mindset
  • Learning how to manage emotions and thoughts more effectively
  • Creating a ‘Confidence Backpack’ of tools and strategies

1-1 sessions can be held in person at my coaching room in Gosforth, Newcastle or online. I am DBS-approved and experienced in working with young people.

Accessing Support for Adopted Teens

If your son or daughter is struggling with confidence, please reach out. You may also be able to access funding for coaching through the Adoption Support Fund (which will hopefully continue beyond March 2025)—I recommend speaking with your social worker to see if this is an option for you in the first instance.

I also deliver confidence-building workshops for Adoption UK so am very happy to provide workshops at planned events if you were to organise a group of teens.

For more information or to arrange a chat, please email me or visit my website. Use the booking link if you’d like to book a session.
